It's Crackers to Slip a Rozzer, the Dropsy in Snide
A lot of who I am today has a everything to do with Mad Magazine. My father would say the same thing. He was so obsessed with Mad that when he was a young lad he would save up his allowance to buy three issues: one was for archiving, one was for reading, and the other was to cut up and tack to his bedroom walls.
So, when I was a young lad myself I unearthed his "archive" and began reading every issue. Sadly for my dad, the issues began to lose their archival quality as I dripped ice cream and cereal all over them, but I could tell this was a sacrifice he was prepared to make for my eventual enlightenment. As I poured over the several hundred issues (dating back to the early 50's) I began to learn the language of Mad. My dad and I would spend weekends together trying to draw like Don Martin, create our own non sequitur phrases, staple together our own homegrown comics, and essentially hone the craft of the absurdist. These are some of my fondest memories of childhood.
So, when I saw this site from Doug Gilford showcasing every cover of Mad ever made I was pretty excited. I've probably read every issue dating from the early 50's all the way to the early 80's—about ten times over. After the 80's the quality seemed to taper off, but I might go pick up an issue tomorrow to see what Mr. Neuman has been up to.
