Dengue Fever

So you may have noticed from an earlier post that my favorite album of 2005 is Escape From Dragon House by Dengue Fever. This album is fantastic! It's a retro, jazzy, rocking, psychedelic mix of poppy Cambodian tunes played a group of guys form L.A. and one amazing Cambodian singer. Nimol, the singer, has an incredible voice. At times she reminds me of the Luuk Thung music we used to listen to back in Thailand, but more passionate in a way. And this is not exactly "world" music either because "world" music rarely rocks this hard. Nor is the band great in any ironic sense—they are great because they kick ass!

Much like 3 Mustaphas 3 before them, Dengue Fever doesn't come off as "gimmicky." The band has chops, they're authentic, and that's why they're my new favorite band. (Plus the singer is a total babe!)

So if you're in the mood for something way off the chart pick this one up.
