Powers of 10
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Eames Demetrios for an hour last week when he stopped by our office to talk about the Eames paper line he created with Neenah. Eames is the grandson of Charles and Ray Eames and I'm sure you've seen their work. It was refreshing to get to talk with someone from a family that really understands the place where design and craft meet. It seems like today design is so caught up in brand strategy and knuckleheaded marketing initiatives, that we forget to look at the results. The reason people get into graphic design has little to do with solving business problems and everything to do with making cool things. Charles and Ray found the perfect balance.
Before I knew who Charles and Ray were (or what design was) I watched their film Powers of 10 in grade school. It was fascinating. I only saw it once but it always stayed with me, etched in my mind. After talking with Eames I did a google search and found the movie on YouTube. If you haven't seen it—or even if you have—check it out. Still great stuff after all these years.
It was never my design objective that the furniture be different or novel; only that it be good to sit in, good to use, good to look at, and easy for everyone to buy."
