Top Ten Albums of 2007

Ah, that time of year again. Time to catalog the year’s best efforts from artists, writers, musicians and malcontents. To kick things off I’ll begin with my favorite music and then I’ll follow up with a new list every week until 2008. At that point I’ll finish off by listing the top ten bloggers who complain about how sick they are of top ten lists.

2007’s Top Ten Music

The Shins
Wincing The Night Away

This Album is fantastic and long after the cool kids have written The Shins off as sellouts I’ll still be listening to Wincing The Night Away.
Favorite Track: Red Rabbits

Iron & Wine
The Shepard’s Dog

I almost put this as number one. Sam Beam’s stripped-down folk finally meets with up with some percussion and studio production and the result is exactly what it should be: One of the best albums of the year.
Favorite Track: Carousel.

M.I.A.
Kala

This one wins most ass-kickingest! Great beats and samples (The Clash!) and I’m a sucker for a British accent. Recorded in India, Trinidad, Australia, London, New York and Baltimore.
Favorite Track: Paper Planes.

Radiohead
In Rainbows

I’m assuming that from here on out Radiohead will only release flawless classics.
Favorite Track:
Weird Fishes/Arpeggi

The Bird and The Bee
The Bird and The Bee

I really like this band a lot. I can’t seem to convince anybody else to give them a shot however. I saw them live earlier in the year with Sia. Good stuff: hip, jazzy and slightly ironic.
Favorite Track: Again & Again

The Sea and Cake
Everybody

My other favorite band that only seems to fly under the radar. I’m actually a bigger fan of lead singer Sam Prekop’s solo stuff, but the Sea and The Cake will always do in a pinch. I’ve heard them described as breezy, jazzy & cool and like a lot of folks I can hear the Steely Dan influence (Steely Dan rules btw). Everybody is the perfect summer album.
Favorite Track: Exact To Me

Tegan & Sara
The Con

It’s sort of strange to be an adult male and to like a group calling themselves Tegan & Sara. But seriously, this album kicks ass. Hooks! And lots of ‘em!
Favorite Track: Back In Your Head

Ceu
Ceu

I love to drink cachaça all summer long so I need a Brazilian soundtrack to go with my efforts. Ceu delivers. I think this album is on par with Bebel’s 2007 release Momento but I listened to this one more because Ceu was brand new to me.
Favorite Track: Lenda

The White Stripes
Icky Thump

I will never tire of Jack White’s guitar playing or his singing.
Favorite Track: Rag and Bone

Common
Finding Forever

I like Kanye just as much as the next guy but I think I like Common just a bit better. They do share a lot of the same beats so there’s no love lost.
Favorite Track: The People

Feist
The Reminder

I probably don’t like Feist as much as most people do, but I still think she’s pretty great. And this album is too. I still think her best performance to date is her vocals on a Kings of Convenience track however.
Favorite Track: Intuition

interesting list, and for the most part, i agree with you. Although you know how i feel about the shins. i’m surprised you dont have LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver. It’s my top album of 2007. And p.s. I love top 10 lists, so keep ‘em coming!!

I can’t say I’ve ever listened to LCD Soundsystem so I’ll give them a spin. More lists on the way…

I haven’t fallen in love with In Rainbows yet.

There, I said it.

CrazyVirgo sez:

OH p_aul! come on. IN RAINBOWS is beautiful. for the love…. everyone says it is, so it is.OK? seriously though, i totally admire radiohead’s journey through experimentalism, and i forgive them for “hail to the thief”, but “in rainbows” is one of the purest things they’ve done since “the bends” possibly? You must listen start to finish. do it. put down your Wii and do it!

Geoffrey Smith sez:

Put down your Wii? Do I smell something BURNing?
