Anthony Bourdain in Beirut

I’m a huge fan of Anthony Bourdain, both in print and on his various television escapades. His current show on the Travel Channel is great because he makes a departure from his previous formula (try to eat the weirdest shit possible) and instead makes an effort to find really good, humble, food whether it be in Indian palaces or dirt-floored huts in South America. (And he still manages to sneak in some psychedelic inner-journeys with mushrooms and tree bark.)

Last night’s episode was pretty amazing in that it took place at precisely the moment Israel began its bombing campaign on Beirut. It’s a fascinating perspective on the event, especially since it was completely unscripted. The final scene where Bourdain and crew finally make it to an American ship full of compassionate Marines is pretty amazing. It reminded me of the final pages of Maus when the mice finally meet up with the dogs and all feels comfortable and safe. But Bourdain reminds us that while he is fleeing to safety, many on the ship are fleeing from their homes.

Excellent television. Look for it in reruns.

Damn it. I thought I told TiVo to record that. I hope they rebroadcast it. I saw the ad, and my jaw hit the floor.

I followed the first season of Cook’s Tour, but the second season was kinda lame - too scripted, and too produced. Anthony got lost in the production and I lost interest.
