I’ve never been a fan of Blockbuster Video, mostly because they are beholden to the American Family Association and they have an unofficial censorship policy based on somebody’s idea of morality. Not only that, they actually edit films to fit within said unofficial moral criteria. If you rented movies like Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream from Blockbuster, you didn’t see the film the director intended you to see. And films like The Last Temptation of Christ are banned outright at most stores. (They are available online now.)
And now, in an attempt to compete with Netflix, Blockbuster takes shady business practices to a new low: In a deal with the Weinstein Co., any film produced by the brothers will only be available at Blockbuster. Netfilx customers will have to open a Blockbuster account to see films like The Protector, Bobby, Lucky Number Slevin, Clerks II, etc.
Sucky. This will only inspire me to download Weinstien Co. movies illegally.
