Goodbye LookatLao

Okay, not really. But yes, this site is about to undergo a pretty big change of direction. New branding, new format, new focus, more writing and less blogging. More banter, more candor, more plain-spokenness, more science, more ranting, and some secret new features involving fancy Web 3.0 ajax-controlled super widgets. (I made that last part up.)

In the meantime, check out the new portfolio with some updated projects and then head over to the temporary landing page for Monsoon East to get a look at some of the new dishes I recently photographed for my pal Eric. (New restaurant and site coming in November.) Eric’s doing some pretty interesting stuff, Monsoon East is going to be the new place to eat come holiday season. Holiday season already? Oh boy.

Oh yeah, and keep an eye on Flickr, always new stuff from the darkroom showing up there.

Lots more to come…

Hey, one of the things I love the most about lookatlao is the original layouts across site sections - does one template fit all in the new lookatlao? ;-)

Geoffrey Sez:

@Adam: Good question. The new design is still on paper and I haven’t really determined how much the different sections will differ visually. The reason they differ so much now is largely due to the process of evolution over the last 10 years. In other words: I’ve never really redesigned the site 100% at any one time. So, the site-wide changes are more iterative, and the visual differences more a product of trying to keep up with myself. But, other people have also mentioned they like the fact that it doesn’t feel “templated” so I’ll keep that in mind as I move into the visual design.

Thanks for the input!

Wow Geoff, jumping ahead to web 3.0. Awesome! Seriously, can’t wait to see what you come up with for the next version of the site.

On the portfolio side: love the sketches. Remind me to rummage through your sketch book when you’re not looking.

@Kevin: Yeah, I considered Web 4.0 but that seemed a little aggressive. So for now, LookatLao is keeping it real.

You should have new layouts for every post. Check out what JSM is doing:

Geoffrey Sez:

@Paul: Yeah, I’ve been following JSM’s new site for a while and it’s pretty sweet. (I met him at A List Apart last year and his lecture was by far the most interesting. He’s one to watch for sure.)

So anyway, I’m going to keep a consistent design overall, but I do plan on writing more “magaziney” type stuff with perhaps some unique layout options for the actual front-page posts. Overall my plan is to write longer, more in-depth “articles” and then also a lot more frequent “check this out” posts like I’m doing with the roundup, and then remove all the in-between stuff.
